FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Cash or Card?

You can use your Debit/Credit card for almost all payments. All restaurants, markets, stores, and most of the bars will accept payments by card. Expetions would be local buses, and some of the bars, so make sure to ask before you sit down.

What about tips?

Tips are not included on the bill. Standard tip in a restaurant or a bar is around 10%, but no need to leave tips larger than 15-20 eur, regardles of the bill amount, since that amount is considered a good tip!

Which ATMs to use?

Banks operating in Croatia have almost identical cash withdrawal fees, so if you are using an ATM from any regular bank, that’s ok. ATMs to avoid are Euronet and Auro Domus, as they are not owned by a bank and have high fees!

Dubrovnik Summer Festival?

It’s a very popular cultural manifestation that is held in July and August. It’s organised across different locations in the historical part of city, and there are many plays, concerts, events etc. (many of them in the open)
Tickets are hard to get, so if this sounds interesting to you should visit this WEBSITE and get them now.

Waterpolo Wild League???

Absolute spectacle!! Amateur waterpolo league, where almost every beach in Dubrovnik has it’s own team which competes. The games are played at the end of July and in August. It’s free admission, and if you’re interested, let me know. I’ll send you where you can go to watch a game.

Should I buy Dubrovnik Pass?

If you plan to go on the City Walls AND visit at least one more thing covered by the pass, then yes! Otherwise, don’t bother.
Here is the link for the thing included with Dubrovnik Pass

Where to park in Dubrovnik?

If you are going to the Old Town, your options are limited. There are only 2 parking places where you can leave the car, and they are both quite expensive, around 7 eur/hour. You can find them HERE and HERE

Nightlife?

Old Town is the best place to go out. There is a lot of small vibrant bars in the streets and people from all over the world in them. They all close by 1am, and if you want to stay longer your options are Revelin night Club and Banje beach bar.

Daytrip to Bosnia or Montenegro?

It’s possible to visit both of those countries and come back on the same day. If you plan to do this with a rental car, make sure you have insurance required to cross the border. Expect some waiting time at the border crossing!

Do you recycle?

Unfortunatelly, recycling is not a big thing in Croatia. Currently we only separate plastic and glass bottles from the regular waste. If there is no dedicated recycling bing in your apartment, you can simply put it in a separate trash bag, and the cleaning ladies will take care of it after you check out.

Can I rent a boat?

You can rent a small boat with 4HP engine without any license or permit. It will take you some time to get around, but it’s fun and defintiely worth it. You can visit nearby islands and Old Town. Daily rental goes for around 100 euros. You can also rent bigger boats which come with a skipper, and they go from 500 euros up!

What to do when it rains?

From April to October we have less than 10 rainy days. So if it happens that it rains on of the days during your stay, you’re out of luck. Dubrovnik is a ”summer city” and besides visiting museums or going to the cinema there isn’t much to do when it rains.

Anywhere to go hiking?

Yes, you can go hiking in Mlini. Area is safe, there are no venomous plants or animals along the way, just bring some water and you’re good to go. Malaštica is the most popular hiking spot. When you get close to the top of the hill, pay attention for any signs as the top of the hill is also border with Bosnia, so don’t end up in a different country! laughing Access point to the hiking trail is HERE

Are there any biking routes?

Unforutantelly, there are no designated biking routes in Dubrovnik area. Roads are narrow, and people tend to drive fast, so I’d recommend not biking at all as it could be un-safe. If there are any guided biking tours available, that would be better than going on your own.

Which islands to visit?

Lopud island is definitely most fun of the 3 Elafiti islands. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and the only sandy beach in the area. And you can get there with a local ferry. The problem is that ferry is not that frequent, and you would end up spending 6 hours there (at most) unless if you want to spend a night there. Still interested? Ask me how to get there with a ferry.

Is there a dresscode in the Old Town?

Actually, yes! New city order says that you need to be dressed properly when in the Old Town. This means that you can’t walk around topless, or in swimming suits, bikinis, without a t-shirt etc. The fine is around 150 euros. Everything else is perfectly ok!
